Where the fees can outweigh the cost of coverage, and those fees are to cover other peoples medical bills. It's only a 0.45 L engine so the insurance is cheap, but when the coverage is $112 and the fees are $186 to be insured each year, seems like some bullshit to me. Could be wrong though. For those that don't know:

The MCCA reimburses auto no-fault insurance companies for each Personal Injury Protection (PIP) medical claim paid in excess of a set amount. Currently that amount is $530,000. That means that the insurance company pays the entire claim, but is reimbursed by the MCCA for medical costs over $530,000.

Michigan has some of the highest insurance costs in the country due to the MCCA, not exactly news.

Yeah and because I have 2 bikes, my car, wifes car, I get to pay that fee 4 times a year. $744 even though we can only drive 2 of those 4 vehicles at any time

talk to your insurance company about dropping coverage on the bikes over the winter.

I do it on the Montego. My $112 or so for 6 months goes down to $17 for the 6 winter months on it.

Like I said it's only 0.45 L engine, It's a dirt bike made street legal so I'm not going over 100 mph. No points on the license helps too. But I can already tell my first speeding ticket will more than likely be on 2 wheels

I'd rather see them pro rate that damn MCCA fee. 4 vehicles between 2 people is a bitch each year to pay. Especially when only 2 can be driven at a time and the 2 bikes can only be ridden maybe 9 months of the year at most

I think my 08 sv650 was a little over 300/year but that was for no coverage. I added an 07 cbr600rr with full coverage and that's almost 1200/year even with high deductibles. My first bike was like 220/year and I remember trying to get a second quote with a different insurance company but they couldn't get it any lower because of the mcca charge.

Those rates increase exponentially with engine displacement too.

Yeah there's a lot of factors that go into it, my first bike was a gs1100e but it was still cheapest for insurance because it was an '82.

I know, I'm insuring my Camaro (full coverage), Jeep, and motorcycle, partner pays for his insurance on the Monte and Fusion. If you want to start a petition to cap the MCCA to once per customer instead of once per vehicle, I'd be all in and help distribute it. Until then, it's the only thing about Michigan life that isn't a whole lot cheaper than my home state of New York or LA, where I lived for my first job.

$300 / yr all-in honestly doesn't seem that bad. That's about what the rate was on my ZX-10 for comparable coverage. Different state and completely different bike, of course, but we're talking about liability coverage only.

Oh that rate's fine with me. It's just ridiculous when the fees are so expensive in this state that they actually trump the rate itself.

That's not bad at all. I just moved up here and my bike insurance came out to $760 per year

Amen. I’m paying around $350 to insure my little Mazda3 s. One “no-fault” (which was sorta bullshit, as I basically got punted off the road) accident in the winter plus being an 18-year-old driver makes my insurance hell.
